RAG stands for ‘Raising and Giving’ and that’s exactly what we do!
RAG is a working committee of students at Sheffield Students’ Union who organise bundles of fundraising events over the academic year. All fundraising is completely student-led, this means that the committee, and student groups they work with, choose exactly which events they want to run, and the charities that benefit. Supported by the Community Fundraiser and the RAG intern - two full-time staff members - they aim to raise as much money as possible, and have a lot of fun in the process!
Sheffield RAG was formed in 1920 and its first event was known as ‘Hospital Saturday’ at which our medical students raised funds for local hospitals, particularly in the struggle against Tuberculosis. Since then we’ve continued to develop and expand whilst retaining our local ethos.
We love the community that we become a part of as students, so we aim to donate 85% of our annual total to local charities in South Yorkshire and the North Derbyshire area. We like to make a difference to smaller charities who cannot afford to have large-scale fundraising programmes. We hope that the amounts we donate can make an even bigger difference to such organisations, and our local community.
However, if you’ve got a charity in mind already that’s great – working with RAG is really flexible, but it’s great to find out all about the local causes out there who often go unnoticed!
We raise money primarily through putting on a whole academic year of fundraising events; everything from bake sales to bungee jumps!
Across the year we give students the opportunity to take part in dynamic and exciting happenings: nocturnal star-lit ramblings in the Peak District, legendary hitch-hikes across Europe, and sleep-outs on the concourse to bundles of events organised by clubs and societies right here in the Students’ Union.
RAG committee also support Sports Clubs, Societies and Individuals fundraise under the RAG Reps programme and Adopt a Charity Programme.

We are located in the Activities and Sports Zone inside the Students' Union. Enter through the main entrance from the concourse, straight forward and turn left at the box office where you will find plenty of tables, comfy seats and two beaming smiles at the Zone desk. We are in the large office behind this, with the big glass sliding door!

Bummit is a committee in its own right, linked to RAG through their commitment to fundraising, and hitching! In 2014-2015 Bummit Committee raised £85,907.80 for charity.
Bummit organise landmark charity hitchhikes. Baby Bummit, the epic UK hitchhike and Big Bummit the legendary European hitchhike which takes place in Easter Vacation.
The Adopt a Charity Scheme is for everyone; individuals, student groups, societies and sport clubs. The programme revolves around you – you choose who you fundraise for and how you fundraise.
RAG Reps is a great, fun and flexible way to make a positive contribution to society by fundraising for charities, whilst being a student at the University of Sheffield.
The great thing about RAG Reps is that the extent of your involvement is up to you, you can take part in whatever number of events YOU want to, and this year, the charities we fundraise for will be voted for by YOU and the events are designed and run by YOU! There is no limit to what you can do as RAG Rep, whether you want to hold large-scale events such as a Food Crawl or smaller events such as bake sales, RAG Reps is here to help you make that happen!
As a student living in University accommodation you can choose to donate £2 per term when paying your rent to help us tackle homelessness in Sheffield.
In 2014-2015 students raised £23,846.00 to help fight homelessness in our city. A panel of students living in the residences decide what projects and charities to support.
